1982 - johnson matthey silver award

Nio teapot. This iconic and award-winning collection was made for about 10 years from 1999, and was a favorite of many Museum stores around the world, because if its distinctive styling. Originally designed by Oliver when he was at Art school in 1982 it became the centerpiece of his business in the early millenium.

THE AWARD.
The prize for winning the Johnson Matthey Silver Award in those days was 1Kg of pure silver from Johnson Matthey. Yes that's right, 1 Kg , and that's easily enough to make about 3 teapots! As a poor student at art school studying silversmithing, it was not always possible to use real silver and gold because of the cost, so invariably we had to practice with copper and gilding metal and then silver plate it. So winning this was an amazing opportunity to use the real material and make my design. I loved my time at Art School and can honestly say that I discovered my design soul there and that I still follow the same principles of design and simplicity today.

1982 - Rsa bursary

industrial design 

A long time ago, when I was a student at art school in Leicester England, I won a bursary from the Royal Society of Arts which made me an associate fellow of the RSA at 20 years old. I had entered a competition to design an trophy for British Industrial exports. I designed and made it in silver and green Welsh slate. Like many students of art I was influenced by Art Deco and the Italian Futurist movement. Amazingly I still have the photo I took in the Art School Photography studio.

THE AWARD.
Apart from being made an associate fellow of the RSA for a year, they gave me 750 pounds as travel bursary which I remember spending on a tour of Greece.
